~ The customs line that we waited in for about an hour 1-4-09
Antigua was a beautiful island that felt like a larger version of Nevis. We got there around 330 local time and then had to wait in line for an hour just to get through customs and get our bag. Everything seemed fit for a king on the island when we arrived. However, as we watched how slow the customs people worked we realized that we were finally back in the Caribbean.
The airport moved slowly inside, but it was even slower outside. Jen and I went to the place where we were supposed to get free transportation to the resort. What do you know, our names are not on the list. : ) We were not really all that surprised so we went to the taxi stand and got a taxi. The driver and another driver were arguing over who got our fare because it was $28 US. Which to most may not sound like a lot, but in the local currency it is equal to about $74 EC. This is good money for a 15 minute taxi drive.
Long story short, the guy got us there in one piece but scared me to death with his driving. He was going about 100 km/hr on winding, broken up streets while crowding the center line. I presume it was because he was angry, whatever the reason I was pretty scared. And yes mom, I wore my seatbelt : ) Probably the most ironic thing during the whole taxi ride was the fact that the radio was on a gospel channel and they kept saying to find the Lord. I took it as a sign and asked for safety during the ride, in silent prayer of course.

Once we arrived at the resort everything fell into place. I was able to obtain some dinner since we had not really eaten all day. The dinner was excellent, the dessert was not, and the room was as comfortable as could be. We slept in a bit, then back to breakfast. It was all-inclusive so I had a nice big breakfast. Breakfast was good, but not nearly as good as the curry chicken and the rice the night before.
After all of the eating was over, it was back to the beach. The beach was far nicer than I can remember it being on Nevis. This beach was clean and white as could be.

We relaxed and took our time before heading back to the airport to take off for Nevis. Little did we know the adventure was just beginning after being dropped off at the Antigua airport……

i have to say the island of Antigua was wonderful, but i will probably never ever go back because the airport was a disaster.
air traffic control on strike?? i’m very nervous about flying through there with my parents in April. hopefully all of the labour disputes will be over by then.
besides… we have so many other Caribbean islands to see first! : D
